July 25th, 2008

Following the suggestions of Nina, we’ve decided to start a twitter feed by picking some random blog posts on TCBN and posting them everyday.

TCBN Feature Profile on StudentBusinesses.com

July 1st, 2008

StudentBusinesses.com is a community targeted at campus entrepreneurs and features a different student business each month on their blog. The site’s got a robust directory of other student companies that includes everything from SaaS applications to brick-and-mortar businesses. SB has strong entrepreneurial roots and was co-founded by the President of Harvard University’s College Entrepeneurship Forum. They’ve also got one of the most impressive advisory boards I’ve seen for a college business.

If you’ve got your own campus-based business, I highly suggest registering with StudentBusinesses.com. Since we registered a couple of months back, we’ve had a couple of valuable conversations with other student entrepreneurs working in online new media to discuss possible partnerships.

Supporting Web Standards

June 23rd, 2008

We recently decided to no longer support antiquated browsers in an effort to promote web standards.

Users visiting with an older version of Internet Explorer (6.0 or less) are now prompted with this message:

For those who are using older versions of Internet Exploder and do not wish to update, there is still the option to “Skip and continue to The College Blog Network” but we recommend updating to Firefox2 / IE7 or equivalent for The College Blog Network to display and perform correctly.

Ranking algorithm in detail…

June 16th, 2008

TCBN member Dave recently made a post that provides some more details about the changed ranking algorithm. While none of us had ever thought that one could possibly define “hotness” in terms of code and mathematics, Dave has succeeded.

Below is a graph in his famed comic style that depicts some of the changes. Check out the full post here.

June Update!

June 11th, 2008

Back here with another update. We’ve been working on some new fixes and advancing towards our full redesign and feature integration set for mid-summer. Some of the recent repairs include:

  • Sign-Up Fixes - It was recently brought to our attention that blogs containing tildes (~) in the URL were unable to complete the registration process. Now any type of URL is valid and can successfully register.
  • Post Time Fix - Post times on Blogwire should be much more accurate now.
  • TCBN Hotlist - We’ve added a new sidebar to the Blogwire page that displays the hottest blog posts based on an algorithm which tabulates time since post and amount of views. There’s also a  new Hotlist RSS feed located on the BlogWire page that only publishes the most popular blog posts.
  • Remember Me Box - Now TCBN remembers your login information! You might have noticed this small addition on our main page.

In addition to the coming redesign, we’re also going to be integrating a couple of new features and tools:

  • Custom User Widgets - These make it easier to share TCBN content from your blog and other users on your blog page or website.
  • New Ranking System - Thanks to the help of one of our members, we’ve reworked our ranking algorithm to something a little more complex. The new ranking system takes some more factors into account including post history, historical bump/dump rankings of blogs and the bump/dump history of individual blog posts (coming soon.)
  • New Design - This is something that we’ve been promising for months now, but it’s finally under construction and it looks amazing so far. We’re working closely with some of our members and some others in the social media community to optimize our redesign and some of the coming features.

A lot of what we’re working on now couldn’t be made possible without some of TCBN’s own members. Thanks to Dave for his mathematical wizardry in developing our new ranking algorithm!

Feel free to contact us if you’re encountering any issues with the site or have any ideas about how we could improve!

More support from the trenches!

May 29th, 2008

Over the last month, TCBN traffic has seen a substantial increase, due largely to referrals from our users’ blogs and blog posts about TCBN. We just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge and show our appreciation for the recent support. For a small operation that started with one college, we’ve been extremely pleased with our growth thus far and are happy to see the site scaling up. This summer should give us more time to dedicate to features, site design, and promotion.

It’s been especially interesting for us to see what our users are saying about the site (good and bad). A recent post by an insightful blogger on social media (who just happens to be a member) gives a nice overview of the site and some of its features. Thanks for the support, Julian!

Alltop.com now featuring BlogWire

May 27th, 2008

We’re always working to help expand the “college blogosphere” by seeking partners and innovative ways of syndicating our users’ content. Getting a listing on Alltop.com is a milestone for TCBN and marks another big step in creating more channels to publicize college bloggers. We hope that it helps to accelerate our site’s growth and drive some more traffic to our users’ blogs.

Alltop.com is one of the web’s premiere blog aggregators. TCBN’s own BlogWire feed was just added to the site’s education section. TCBN is still the only site that aggregates blogs by college students exclusively. You can take a look at our addition and some of the other sites on Alltop’s education area here:

April 28th, 2008

We’ve been busy building out some new features, wrapping up school, and enjoying the spring weather, but we just couldn’t ignore some recent support we’ve received from our fellow members. We always appreciate seeing other people enjoy some of the features and plugging our site.
